How to sort waste at the cabin

Now we’re going to be just as good at the cabin as we are at home! Here is a guide on how to best sort your waste at the cabin – and where to deliver it.

When we sort our waste, we use natural resources more smartly. A milk carton can become new paper, a bread bag can become new plastic packaging, and food waste can become biogas. In 2023, a new law was introduced requiring waste sorting for everyone – including at the cabin. Ringsaker municipality, together with the local waste company Sirkula, has facilitated several larger recycling points with sorting options in Ringsakfjellet.

But what should be sorted? And where should it be delivered? We have gathered useful information about waste management at Sjusjøen to help you get started.

What must be sorted

You can sort the following types of waste at the cabin and deliver them to the recycling points:

• Food waste
• Paper and thin cardboard (not corrugated cardboard)
• Plastic packaging
• Glass and metal packaging
• General waste

What to sort it into

To deliver food waste, you need a specific bag. You can find these in a separate box at the recycling point.

You must provide your own bags for general waste and plastic. Many people use carrier bags for this. Bags can also be bought on rolls at grocery stores and shops like Europris, Rusta, etc.

Glass and metal packaging, paper, and drink cartons should be thrown loosely into the waste wells, not in bags.

Where to deliver

There are currently six recycling points with sorting options:

• Nordsetervegen
• Storåsen
• Elgåsen
• Kvarstadsætra
• Hammarseterhøgda
• Benstigen

At Benstigen, in addition to general waste, paper and cardboard packaging, and glass and metal packaging, you can deliver corrugated cardboard, wood, pressure-treated wood, hazardous waste, electrical and electronic waste, metal, plasterboard, and non-combustible general waste.

Corrugated cardboard can only be delivered at Benstigen or at one of Sirkula’s recycling stations.

Is one of the waste wells full? Try the next one! The recycling points have several wells for each type of waste. If all the waste wells at a recycling point are full, Sirkula requests that the waste be delivered to Benstigen, where capacity is greater.

During holidays, Sirkula assesses the need for extra containers at some of the recycling points.

Smart sorting solutions at the cabin

If you haven’t already started, it might be a good idea to set up a system for waste sorting at the cabin. Many people scratch their heads and wonder how to fit several waste bins into an already small space.

Fortunately, there are many smart solutions for how to sort waste inside the cabin.

You can keep it simple by, for example:

· using small boxes or tote bags for each type of waste

· getting space-efficient sorting cabinets

· using a bag/box system to hang up or keep in a cupboard/storage room

Many people use small buckets for general waste and food waste in the cupboard under the kitchen sink, while cardboard, paper, plastic, and glass and metal packaging are kept out in the storage room.

Remember that we produce less waste at the cabin than at home, so the waste containers at the cabin don’t need to be that large.

What to deliver to the recycling station

Unfortunately, the recycling points cannot accept all types of waste, as the openings on the waste wells are limited in size. Therefore, larger items must be taken to the recycling station – in Moelv, Brumunddal, or the circular economy park just outside Hamar.

Perhaps you even have things you want to get rid of that can be reused? In the circular economy park just outside Hamar, you can deliver items for local reuse*. Here they accept furniture, sports equipment, home decor, and electronics. The items are refurbished, quality-checked, and resold at the same location, at Norway’s first reuse shopping center Resirkula.

The circular economy park is best equipped to receive items for reuse, but if you have a few small items for reuse, these can also be delivered to the recycling stations in Moelv or Brumunddal.

Remember to always contact the staff before delivering anything for reuse.
